Why Be An Entrepreneur?

why-be-an-entrepreneur

Becoming an entrepreneur has several benefits. When you successfully build your own business, you are on your way to building financial freedom.  Achieving financial freedom means you now have enough money to invest. Then you have enough to put in real estate, stocks, fixed deposit, etc.

One other advantage of being an entrepreneur is that you are your own boss; you do not have to report to anyone; the business picks up your bills; you have become the responsibility of your company. The company pays your children’s school fees.

When it comes to giving, it is the entrepreneurs that are able to give more. You cannot be crazier in your giving than your salary allows you.

Why do we not start businesses? I have found out that the number one reason is the fear of the unknown. That is, what if the business cannot take off? What if I do not have enough money to start the business the way I like?

Many people have allowed themselves to believe that salary provides security. The truth is that there is no security in an income that cannot allow you to plan for your future.

Most people say they want financial security. If you are shooting for financial security, you are shooting too low. Shoot for financial freedom.  I have set a target for myself that if I do not work for the rest of my life, I can never be poor again. Poor people work for money; rich people make their money to work for them.

It is sometimes amazing to discover that most people that have concluded that they do not have the money to start a business actually have treasures around them. Consider this for example: a man who was sacked from his place of work was complaining that his career had been ruined. He packed his car in the house and was looking for employment all over the place. But after searching fruitlessly for a non-existing job for about six months, one of his mentors; a minister of God pointed to him the wisdom in turning his car into a taxi. He heeded the advice. Today, he boasts of about eight cars in his fleet. How about that?

What you have is enough to start with and where you are is good enough to start.

You will Succeed!

The piece is absolutely right n the fear of being stranded in a particular point in time due to the starting stage, process of growing n challenges of running it successfully are all dat makes most people feel comfortable with a salary job which leaves them off the worry of how much the business is moving, once the salary is coming in.

A powerful piece you shared with us here, from my little experience, what i have learnt from your teaching, there are lots of excuses people give for not starting or running their own business. Like you always say and i sincerely and totally agree with you ” it is not an excuse” but sir, there are loads of pressure from the society, family and friends when it comes to issue of money, that is why many young Nigerians now engaged in other illegal form of making money, they get celebrated and no body not even the family “parents” asked them where the money comes from. I pray and hope that your teaching will reach many Nigerian youths, minister to them and change them. A wonderful job you are doing sir. God Bless You.

    • Thank you too Segun

I believe most people want to become entrepreneurs, but lack of capital and fear of failure are the hindrances. Otherwise, it is a sweet life to live when success comes with it.

    • Thank you Graceful for your comment. There is always a price to pay for everything including gaining fianancial freedom,. Being an entrepreneur takes persistence and sacrifice amongst other things.

Thank you Sir for this inspiring write up. I started my business in 2011. It grew but not to the point of paying all my bills. I went back to work in 2013 but kept someone to manage it for me. I am currently working but constantly feeling like leaving it for my business. I believe that if i return to my business it will grow faster. I am afraid of loosing the job security. Someone, please advise. Thank you

    • Hello Zulai, Thank you for your question. Please accept our apology for the late reply. Running a business takes persistence and sacrifice. Please note that there is no security in job security. Choose to go for financial freedom and not job security. God bless

Fantastic insights. A step in the right direction to financial freedom is entrepreneurship and it takes a great conviction and preparedness by my own understanding. I have acquired 10 hectares of land for farming yet fear to leave the job because the immediate security of my salary in paying my immediate bills. I will give myself a time line till 6 months from now to start putting reserves in order and make payments of my children’s school fees for the rest of the year and then start fully without leaving my job yet. Dear sir, I hope this works out for me and rely on your guidance. Your audio cds have been very insightful and pointers for me. God bless you immensely sir. Thank you

Great write up sir,i took the initiative sometimes ago by going into sales of cars but it went the other way round and resulted into loss of part of the capital, but after thinking about what actually went wrong and blaming myself for diving into such business at this period in time…….the only thing that kept on coming to my mind was RISK……and i evaluated the whole thing and came to the conclusion that some successful people today encounter risk and they did not give up………though am under a paid employment but also i feel something telling me not to give up on being an entrepreneur…….Thanks a lot sir for this write-up……indeed you are an INSPIRATION to a lot of people….GOD bless you sir

    • God bless you! Remember failing is another opportunity to try again; this time more intelligently

  • Ayolla Osholla

Grateful to you Sir for this thoughtful piece. More inspiration Sir.

Very insightful Pastor Sam, especially the distinction between being financially secure and financially free, we often confuse both. Another benefit I see in starting one’s own business is that it gives you the opportunity to do what you really love to do, are called to do and equipped to do instead of what you have to do. And its only in doing what you are meant to do that you reach your highest potential.

Well said sir, I have started with what i have which is my passion for well put together make up and hair, friends have asked for my help in getting their hair well made, which led to my adventure into making wigs and I’m doing pretty well, what is left to learn now is the business side of my passion, as i will definitely lose out if my account is not in order.

    • Welldone Damilola! Since you have identified that you need training in business structure, find out where you can get it done and go for it. The sky is not your limit

  • Josephine

Thank sir for this write-up, i have worked in a business centre for 10years while running a part-time programme, though through with the pt, but result not out, in March this year, i changed work to office work but salary not much, somehow i don’t feel satisfy in the job, sometimes i feel i don’t know my purpose, but i really want to be an entrepreneur in the line of the business i was before, please advice sir.

    • Thanks for your question Josephine. One of the pointers to your purpose is your passion. Pay attention to whatever you enjoy doing and find out the money making opportunities therein. Do you have friends with like passion? You could also partner with them. Stay on top

  • Gablaw

    Nice impartation Sir, God bless

  • Momodu Oladapo

Thank you very much sir, i don’t even know how to define myself but i believe God is the one who has the best definition. To the best of my knowledge, i am a web designer coupled with graphical skills and social media administration skills. I have been using this talent to provide my basic needs and now i have been able to gain admission into the Univeristy. Now i am aiming high, i have no actual place of my own to stay, or office to use but i still intend to continue pushing myself the same way i have been doing and hoping that one day i will be counted as one of the leaders in the market.

Please dont stop giving your advise and steps towards getting the ultimate prize which is success, i come from an islamic background, God picked me and asked me to follow Christ; i did and then my family KICKED ME OUT and since then i have been soaring higher than i ever expected.

Keep up the God work sir, though i have nothing to show for my struggle now; i believe that my seeds are still growing and harvest is not far away, However i want to sow professionally, diligently and prudently because sometimes the tide is always high. Please pray for me and don’t stop your messages, you are my mentor, my display picture on whatsapp and on my computer desktop. LOL.

    Cheers

    • Wow! Thank you for such an honor! You are going places. Keep up the tenacious spirit, update yourself with the trends in your field and remain on the cutting edge. See you at the top Dapo

  • Osunkoya Olusola

Thank you sir for your kind words always. I love being an entrepreneur. I am under paid employment but also an entrepreneur into catering. This year i started bottled Zobo and the only thing holding me back from doing real publicity is getting Nafdac Number. Also i want more clarification on what i want to believe is my passion. l love making hair, food and generally like learning new skills. i have ideas on how i can combine all. those are the only things i am happy doing. Could this be my purpose. thank you sir.

    • I believe you are on the right track Olusola! I will also suggest that whatever you are doing do with all your might. Give your passion your best. As you do so, you will discover more about yourself and new things will open up to you and you will get more clarity.

      • FolaShade

“Give your passion your best. As you do so, you will discover more about yourself and new things will open up to you and you will get more clarity”. That got me. Thank you so much Pastor Sam, Gods blessings now and always.

Your position in life is within your passion. And your passion determines your portion. Acts 20:32- to give you an inheritance among them that are sanctified.

  • Adewunmi

Good day sir, I am Adewunmi. I am a graduate nurse by profession and currently working with a state government that is owing 6 months salary; also at the same time running a masters program and planning my wedding which is coming up next month. Your write up has been very enlightening especially telling the difference between financial security and financial freedom. I love reading, counselling and caring for people. I am also an introvert by nature. Though I got a pressing in my spirit to write to single ladies a while back. Am presently seeking the face of God in confirming if this vision is from him and how to go about it. In the present, I need financial liberty as my current financial situation is embarrassing and mocking my faith as a Christian. I believe I am redeemed to be envied and not pitied. How do I go about become an entrepreneur. Need a word of advice by the holy spirit sir.

    • Hello Adewunmi! congratulations on your wedding in advance. Favour and provision will accompany your plans and God will establish your home. It is sad that the government owes you salary for 6mths, however, it would turn out for your good. Since you enjoy counselling, writing an article to single ladies is a step in the right direction. Through writing you can express your counselling gift. You may start by sending it to your friends email addresses and you may also take advantage of the social media in order to benefit others. As you begin other ideas and avenues will open up to you

  • David Valentine

Thank you so very much Sir for you have been a mentor to me even from the time i can’t really remember and your teaching, your write up and everything you do here has been in one or two ways benefiting to me but as of now i am an undergraduate who aspire to do much more than just been an undergraduate, i love to be one of the greatest entrepreneur ever, i aspire to be the change that i want the world to be, i love writing articles, writeup, love been an inspirational, love been a motivator which am thinking of been a blogger and start from anywhere i can but my fears are i have neither finance or materials but am thinking of starting from somewhere so Sir i need your candid advice on what to do and where to start from exactly and by the grace of God i will be attending the seminar that’s coming fort next week at your church in Ikeja, so Sir i need your blessings and advice Sir

    • Thank you David for your question. Start with what you have where you are. find a platform where you can express your writing skills. Perhaps the publicity unit in your church. You could also writing short plays for the drama unit. Let as many people know of your writing gift as much as possible and doors will open to you. God bless

  • Mfonobong Udoinyang

  • Olusegun

Thank you sir for this article at a time like this.I want to start out now as an entrepreneur leaving a paid job. sometimes it’s scary because of the economic postion of the nation and also the responsibility of the family. There’s a saying that you don’t test the depth of a river with your two legs at the same time, how can i navigate through this water?
    Thanks.

    • Hello Olusegun! There will never be a perfect time to follow your dreams. So do not look at the economy. Act boldly and unforeseen forces will come to your aid. Write down the structures you need to put in place to make the transition easier and discuss it with your family. You will succeed

  • Theodora Isola

This is a timely message for me. Reading through, I got a good reminder that I have enough to start with and where I am is good enough to start.

I will become better by doing not waiting to become better before I start doing.

For example, I already have a certain amount I want to earn monthly but here’s what I did while reading your message sir.

I did a breakdown of how the money will be managed in percentage and I have decided to begin implementing with every money that comes in.

Thank you for being a blessing sir to my generation.

    • Wonderful Theodora! Success is the achievement of set goals and i see you are taking giant steps already.
